Electrical Tip on Whole House Surge Protectors

If you are like most people, you probably have a few power strip surge protectors throughout your house to protect your home from power surges. Unfortunately, most provide little to no protection against power surges. What causes power surges? Lightning, problems with the utility company’s equipment, large appliances cycling power on and off, faulty wiring, and downed power lines are just a few things that cause power surges. What is at risk? All items that have a microprocessor are at risk during a power surge. This includes items like televisions, computers, refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens, alarm systems, microwaves and telephones.

It is amazing how many items in your house actually need to be protected from an electrical surge. If an electrical surge were to occur today, how much money would you stand to lose? Wouldn’t it make sense to have ONE surge protector that would protect your entire house?

It’s a wise decision to be prepared before the next electrical surge hits your home. Get a whole-home surge protector that will protect not only your power lines but your cable and telephone lines. If you protect yourself from a power surge at the source you will experience benefits like:

  • Saving Time and Money – After an electrical surge, all your neighbours will be spending time calling electricians to come out and replace the microprocessors in all their electronic devices. Your neighbours will have to shell out countless dollars to replace electronic devices that no longer function. But, if you have a whole-home surge protector you will be able to sit back, relax and be secure in the fact that once the power returns, all your expensive electronics will return to normal.
  • Insurance for Your Electronics – Whole home surge protectors provides inexpensive insurance compared to the cost of replacing all your electronics. Sales Point Advantage - Differentiate your house from all the other houses on the market. It’s an inexpensive way to make your house stand out from the competition. This is a great feature for home builders as well. This could be the attention to detail the buyer is looking for.
  • Peace of Mind – You can relax the next time a lightning storm occurs or the next power surge takes place in your area. You can rest assured that your electrical devices are protected. It only takes seconds to destroy countless expensive electronic devices, so don’t wait until it is too late!

Note: To protect yourself from surges that originate within the house, it is a good idea to take extra precautions and continue to use power strip/surge protectors for extra sensitive or expensive devices.

Is an RRSP the best thing to do to reduce my tax bill?

Taxes are a reality – we’re not going to get away from them anytime soon. So instead of thinking about avoiding them in any given year, we should think about reducing taxes over your lifetime. Really, it depends on your situation. If you see a raise coming down the line, it might be good to hold off on the RRSP or, if you are leaving your job soon and see a severance package coming, holding off is a good option there too. In these circumstances, a Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) might be a better option. On the other hand, you may be reducing your hours or going on a leave of some sort in which case maxing out now might be the right option. There are also other options like Labour Sponsored Investment Funds (LSIF) – a currently popular one in Saskatchewan is Saskworks Venture – that gives an additional tax credit equal to 35% of deposit up to $5000/yr. So, again, there is no clear cut option. But, as I always say, I’d rather pay tax on money I have than not pay tax on money I don’t have!

RRSP deadline is March 1st, right?

Simple answer – yes. But should it be?

According to this article:  there is evidence to support investing on October 28th. Some years it works out, some years it doesn’t. But if you average it out, it’s probably the best way to go.

I often have clients do the monthly purchase for convenience and for something called ‘Dollar Cost Averaging’ during which a regular purchase buys units at whatever the price happens to be that day – averaging it out over a period of time often means you’ll have paid less per unit than the average cost over that same period of time. But a lot of people also have lump sums they like to do just in time to get the tax break. If this is what you are doing, it can be argued that March 1st is not a great time to invest and maybe a little forethought could result in a greater rate of return.

Just because you have a deadline, doesn’t mean you should aim for it!

Trusted Regina Electrical Experts at Active Electric tip on Energy Efficiency

Active Electric are Trusted Regina Electricians and they get it right the first time, delivering all electrical services including installation, upgrade, and repair solutions. In their latest Trusted Regina electrician tip they share tips to conserve energy.

Looking for Ways to Save Energy?

More and more consumers are switching to energy-efficient electricity. They want to make smart decisions when it comes to installing their home with appropriate energy-saving devices. By making the switch you not only save yourself money, but you help save the environment from toxic fossil fuel pollution and help to create a more secure energy future for America. It can be a challenge to determine the best steps to take in order to yield the greatest benefit in your home.

  • Lighting Dimmers and Timers
  • Conservation is good for everyone.
  • Power Consumption Meters:
  • A Power consumption meter measures how much energy each appliance consumes to help you find ways to cut back.
  • Wireless Lighting Controls:
  • Reduce unnecessary energy consumption by controlling your lights with dimmers, programmable light switches, automatic lights, sensors and timers.
  • Solar Energy Systems:
  • Reduce your overall home energy costs, qualify for state and federal incentives, and become more environmentally friendly by installing a solar energy system in your home.

TOP FIVE REASONS TO CONSERVE:

1. Reduce your heating and electrical bills.

2. Reduce water, air and soil pollution. This will not only help the environment but protect your children and your grandchildren from chemical pollution and disease.

3. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This will help reduce the effects of global warming on our environment.

4. Decrease North America’s energy dependence.

5. Decrease need for fossil fuel, oil, coal, propane, and natural gas. With less of a demand for these types of energy we will be on our way to cleaner more responsible energy use.
